Learning to care through play

Every year, DR Ramasjang encourages Danish children to help “save a Danish animal.” Previous animals have ranged from birds and bats to the great crested newt. In 2026, the spotlight is on the adorable hazel dormouse.

To support the campaign, we have updated the Ramsjang Redder game, which we have developed and maintained for several years. The latest update introduces a brand-new level dedicated to the hazel dormouse and its unique world.

As part of the development process, we illustrated the hazel dormouse in a variety of poses and created new houses that children can build to provide a safe and welcoming habitat. We also researched the animal’s behaviour, preferences, and natural environment, translating those insights directly into the gameplay.

Build, Explore, Discover

Children can build a collection of cosy homes designed especially for the hazel dormouse. Each habitat can be customized with different elements, encouraging creativity while rewarding exploration with hidden details, playful interactions, and references to the Ramasjang universe.

From a welcoming hotel where the dormouse can curl up for a nap to a restaurant stocked with its favourite foods, every building has its own personality. There is even a miniature science centre where curious players can discover fun facts about the hazel dormouse and the world it lives in.

Returning players will immediately recognize the familiar game mechanics, making it easy to jump in and start building. At the same time, the hazel dormouse introduces new behaviours, preferences, and discoveries, ensuring a fresh experience while staying true to the spirit of Ramsjang Redder.

Unlocking new personalities

As children progress through the game, they unlock new hazel dormice to care for and discover. Their growing collection can be explored in the in-game book, which keeps track of every character they have encountered along the way.

Unlike previous years, where players collected different subspecies, the hazel dormouse presented a unique challenge. To create variety while staying true to the animal, we designed five dormouse characters inspired by real-life behaviours and seasonal changes throughout the year.

Each character reflects a different stage in the hazel dormouse’s natural cycle. One may be sleepy and preparing for hibernation, eager to gather nutritious autumn food, while another is more active. By turning biological facts into personalities, we created a collection system that is both educational and engaging.

Litter alerts, Science & Discovery

Throughout the game, children encounter small activities that encourage positive habits. Occasional litter alerts prompt players to clean up the habitat, rewarding them while reinforcing a simple message: nature thrives when we take care of it.

Through campaign materials, tv shows and in-game experiences, children learn how researchers and nature enthusiasts can identify the presence of the elusive hazel dormouse without necessarily seeing it directly.

These discoveries are brought together in the game's miniature science centre. Here, players can see clues such as hazel dormouse bones and a nut marked with the distinctive bite patterns the species leaves behind. The science centre also features a map showing where the hazel dormouse can be found in Denmark.
